A year in four numerals

Rihanna showed her “1988” tattoo on Instagram in August 2015 and credited tattoo artist Bang Bang. The black Gothic numerals sit just above her right ankle. Tattoofilter’s close view shows all four characters and their spacing against her ankle and sneaker.

A separate street photograph by Raymond Hall shows their small scale on the ankle. A later red-carpet view published by Vogue shows the mark from behind as it follows the ankle’s curve.
