In July 2019, Shawn Mendes responded to a fan edit by asking for the underlying butterfly artwork. The Independent reported that the original floral-butterfly design came from Chilean artist Mac Dreaper and that Mendes later had it tattooed on his left upper arm.
Tattoo artist Livia Tsang shared the completed piece directly and credited both the fan edit and Mac Dreaper's original art. Inked documented the same artist post and collaboration, while Billboard Japan reported that Mendes received the tattoo during a tour stop in Dallas. The visible motif is presented without assigning it a personal meaning.
